Overview of the School of Computing for the Creative Industries

This document provides a brief overview of the College's thinking
regarding the CCI School.

Philosophy

The School of Computing for the Creative Industries is a new departure
for Ravensbourne College. It retains Ravensbourne's commitment to
vocationalism and practical skills, as well as Ravensbourne's spirit
of innovation and enterprise. Though the School takes its inspiration
and values from the core of the Ravensbourne tradition, it also
embraces new opportunities and a new vision. The School's programmes
are rigorous with a strong technical focus. One of the undergraduate
programmes is delivered entirely via e-learning. The other programmes
make strategic use of e-learning, digital communications, and Web 2.0
technologies as a living demonstration of, and a process of practical
research in, the subject matter of the School.

Intellectual Property - Creative Commons

Although we recognise an important role for trade secrets and
proprietary knowledge, the School also recognises that open standards
- and open source solutions - have been instrumental in the rapid
growth and enduring success of the internet. Furthermore, we recognise
that appropriation and reuse - rip, mix, and burn - are central to the
progress of innovation in digital technology and the creative
industries. A balanced view of intellectual property, therefore,
recognises the crucial role of open source solutions and a "creative
commons".

An important feature of the Web 2.0 platform is its use of open source
building blocks. And the pace of innovation in the Web 2.0 landscape
is accelerated by the frequent, and routine, open-sourcing of the
tools and techniques of the platform.

The School of Computing for the Creative Industries will release its
learning materials under a Creative Commons license to ensure their
widest possible dissemination and use. Technical facilities in the
School will be built on open source platforms. We will support
students who wish to release projects under free and open source
licenses.
